For over a quarter century, the CR-V, short for Comfortable Runabout Vehicle, according to Honda, has dominated the compact SUV category. With its signature liftgate-mounted spare tire, vertical taillights, and swing-out tailgate, the CR-V stood out from a sea of similar SUVs. Throughout each of the multiple facelifts and generational redesigns, the CR-V became curvier, abandoning its original boxy lines for a more modern curb appearance.
The third generation CR-V launched as a 2007 model and was the first to include a traditional liftgate. This generation also marked the end of the rear door-mounted spare tire. For 2023, Honda offers a fully redesigned CR-V boasting additional passenger space and sportier exterior styling. The four-trim lineup includes two Hybrid options for optimal fuel economy ratings of up to 43 MPG in the city.[c] Two engines power the newest CR-V: a turbocharged 1.5L with 190 hp and a powerful 212-hp 2.0L on the Hybrid engine option that includes two electric motors. Buyers can choose from front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive across the entire range.
Opting for the high-end Sport Touring Hybrid gets you the most luxurious CR-V in the lineup. It includes a premium Bose audio system, leather seating with unique orange stitching, standard all-wheel drive, and a 9-inch infotainment system with navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. A wireless device charger comes standard, along with extra safety systems, including handy parking sensors.
Budget buyers won’t have to compromise when choosing the nicely equipped base model CR-V EX since it has a standard power moonroof, large 18-inch wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Heated seats are also standard on the CR-V EX for an upscale touch. The 7-inch infotainment touchscreen offers the same smartphone connectivity, and Honda’s suite of seven driver-assist systems, known as Honda Sensing, is also included.
