The Civic’s Rich History In The Automotive World

Did you know that the Civic has been around since 1972? It was first introduced as an alternative to the gas-guzzling vehicles from the Detroit “Big 3,” referring to the manufacturers General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, at a time when fuel shortages were plaguing the nation. The Civic dominated its competitors and launched the Honda brand in the United States. The first-ever imported Civic included a tiny 1,169 cc four-cylinder engine, vinyl bucket seats, and an AM/FM radio.

Honda first redesigned the Civic in 1979 as a 1980 model. It grew larger and more aerodynamic and was offered in sedan, hatchback, and station wagon body styles. It wasn’t until the Civic’s seventh generation in 2001 that today’s modern styling became a key selling feature. The seventh generation officially landed the Civic a spot in the compact category, where previously, it was classified as a subcompact.

Fast-forward to the ninth generation in 2011; Honda began expanding its trim lineup and adding a hybrid version. By 2015, the tenth-generation American Civic shared a global compact platform with other small Honda vehicles. This version included multiple technology advancements, including digital driver displays and early driver-assist safety systems. This generation featured a more angular exterior curb profile and an upscale, premium cabin.

Now in its 11th generation, the Honda Civic continues breaking sales records and earning high praise from automotive journalists. Interestingly, the editors at leading review site Car and Driver have bestowed near-perfect overall ratings upon the Civic since 2017, never giving it less than a 9/10 rating. Of the perfect 10/10 rated 2018 Civic, Car and Driver called it “a joy to drive.” [a]

A Look At Some 2022 Honda Civic Highlights

What’s new in the Honda Civic lineup for 2022? In a word: everything. Honda completely redesigned the Civic, starting year one of the eleventh generation. Buyers can choose from a sedan or hatchback body style and trims like the LX, Sport, EX, or Touring for a sedan, or the LX, Sport, EX-L, or Sport Touring for a hatchback. You can also select Honda’s performance-oriented Civic model: the Civic Si.

The Civic Si includes a powerful 200-hp turbocharged 1.5L engine and a throwback 6-speed manual transmission. Together, they propel the Civic Si from zero-to-sixty in just 6.8 seconds. It features unique sport bucket seats with bolsters, along with red contrast stitching throughout the cabin. Drivers will love the standard 12-speaker premium Bose audio system and large 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.

Looking for the most affordable Civic in the lineup? Consider the LX, which defies the typical base model value trim with its many standard premium features. Included in the LX are LED headlights, smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and multiple driver-assist technologies, including a collision mitigation system that will keep you and your passengers safer.

At the top of the lineup sits the Civic Touring, a model that offers an array of luxurious features, such as leather-trimmed seating, wireless smartphone connectivity, and a wireless phone charger. A more powerful 180-hp 1.5L turbocharged engine is also standard, along with a set of LED fog lights and 18-inch alloy wheels. A power moonroof lets the fresh air in, and heated front seats keep you toasty on cold mornings.
