Anonymous donors step up to fight child hunger at two Midland ISD schools

The West Texas community is not wasting anytime when it comes to battling food insecurity among our children.

Last Thursday, The West Texas Food Bank, along with the help of Educate Midland, South Elementary school officials, and South Elementary PTA, shared its effort in setting up a food pantry at South Elementary School. Classic Honda of Midland was the first local business to step up and donate a freezer to the project.

“Education is very important, and these are kids are our future,” said Joey Gabarda, owner of Classic Honda of Midland. “And as a business, we need to give back to the community that has supported us along the way.”

Since Thursday’s announcement, South Elementary School received a phone call from an anonymous donor who said they will cover everything the school needs for the pantry. This includes multiple refrigerators, an additional freezer and all the shelving.

The South Elementary story also told the Alamo Junior High School story who is also working at creating a food pantry for students. Since the airing and publication of this story, a refrigerator, freezer, and all shelving needs has been met at Alamo Junior High School as well!

“This is what collective impact is all about. This shows us what we do to help our neighbors when a real need is made known,” said Mike Mills of Educate Midland. “When the community comes together, good things can happen.

It costs the West Texas Food Bank $5,000 a year to supply a food pantry which will support our students and their families. The West Texas Food Bank needs more sponsors to help pay for these pantries.
