Local groups come together to address hunger issue in South Midland community; Help still needed
On January 24, 2019, members of several local groups came together to make a united plea to the West Texas Community to fight the growing hunger problem in South Midland.
Right now, there are 500 children at South Elementary who are in need of food every weekend. Crestview Baptist Church has stepped in to provide 200 bags every week. However, that is still not enough to feed all these children.
The West Texas Food Bank, along with the help of Educate Midland, South Elementary school officials, and South Elementary PTA, is setting up a food pantry at South Elementary School. The pantry will be located inside one of the portable buildings on campus. Joey Gabarda, owner of Classic Honda of Midland, heard about this project and wanted to help. Gabarda donated a freezer to the pantry that was delivered Thursday afternoon.
"Education is very important and these kids are our future," said Mr. Gabarda. "And as a business, we need to give back to the community that has supported us along the way."
The freezer is one of many items needed for this food pantry. Educate Midland is asking the community to step up and donate necessities for the project such as wire shelves (pictured below), and a refrigerator. It also costs about $5,000 dollars a year to feed these children.
"These children desperately need it," said Mike Mills of Educate Midland.
